BALTIMORE -- D-backs ace right-hander Zack Greinke did not make the trip to Baltimore due to shoulder stiffness, instead returning to Phoenix for an MRI. Although it showed no structural damage, the right-hander's next scheduled start in Washington is in jeopardy.
"He's fine, just a little swelling," manager Chip Hale said after Friday's 3-2, 12-inning loss to the Orioles. "We'll talk about his start, probably not going to be able to start against the Nationals. We'll probably not have him do that so we'll have to decide who that's going to be."
Greinke last started on Wednesday in San Diego, when the right-hander pitched six innings of two-run ball in a win over the Padres. However, he felt soreness in his shoulder after the outing, leading to the decision for him to return to Phoenix rather than continue traveling with the team.
The Arizona ace spent time on the disabled list earlier this season, missing more than a month with an oblique strain. Greinke is 13-7 with a 4.37 ERA in 26 starts, his first season with the D-backs.
