A's Add Three to 40-Man Roster; Announce 11 Non-Roster Invitees

The Oakland A’s selected right-handed pitcher Miguel Romero from Triple-A Las Vegas, right-handed pitcher Wandisson Charles from Double-A Midland and outfielder Greg Deichmann from Single-A Stockton, the club announced today. The A’s also announced 11 non-roster invitees to Spring Training, including right-handed pitchers Domingo Acevedo, Cristian Alvarado, Argenis Angulo, Matt Blackham, Ben Bracewell, Montana DuRapau, Brian Schlitter and Trey Supak and infielders Pete Kozma, Frank Schwindel and Jacob Wilson.

Romero, Charles and Deichmann were all part of the A’s 60-man player pool in 2020 but did not play in any regular season games. All 11 non-roster invitees did not play in 2020.

Romero made his Triple-A debut in 2019 and was 4-1 with three saves and a 3.96 ERA in a career-high 45 appearances for Las Vegas. The 26-year-old right-hander was signed as a non-drafted free agent Feb. 1, 2017 out of Cuba and is 9-5 with 17 saves and a 4.13 ERA in 103 career appearances, including six starts, in three seasons in the A’s farm system. He also compiled a 9-7 record and a 4.80 ERA in 46 games, 10 starts, in four seasons with Guantanamo in Cuba.

Charles pitched for three different teams in the A’s farm system in 2019 and was a combined 4-0 with two saves, a 2.89 ERA and .163 opponents batting average in a career-high 40 games, all in relief. The 24-year-old native of the Dominican Republic signed with the A’s on March 24, 2015 and is 12-6 with nine saves and a 4.28 ERA in 93 games, including 13 starts, in five seasons in the Oakland farm system. He has 226 strikeouts in 170.1 innings but has also walked 150.

Deichmann made his Double-A debut in 2019 with Midland and batted .219 with 11 home runs and 36 RBI in 80 games. He then went on to play for Mesa in the Arizona Fall League and hit .256 with nine home runs and 20 RBI in 23 games. The 25-year-old left-handed hitter was the A’s second round selection in the 2017 draft and is a .232 career hitter with 26 home runs and 94 RBI in 184 games in three seasons in the minors.

Supak was part of Milwaukee’s 60-man player pool and was recalled by the Brewers Aug. 31 for a one-day stint and did not pitch. Acevedo (Yankees), Blackham (Mets), Bracewell (A’s), Kozma (Braves) and Schwindel (Tigers) were also on 60-man player pools. DuRapau posted a 9.35 ERA in 14 games with the Pirates in 2019, Kozma hit 215 with five home runs and 62 RBI in 341 games over seven seasons with St. Louis (2011-15), New York-AL (2017), Texas (2017) and Detroit (2018), Schlitter is 3-6 with a 5.20 ERA in 84 relief appearances over four seasons with the Cubs (2010, 14-15) and A’s (2019) and Schwindel was 1-for-15 in six games with Kansas City in 2019.
