Six Baseball Hall of Famers highlight the Oakland A's 50th Anniversary team, the team announced today. The team includes 50 Oakland Athletics players, past and present, selected from a list of all-time A's greats. The players were selected through an online fan vote, with Rickey Henderson receiving the most votes.
"Growing up in Oakland as an A's fan, I have been able to witness and experience the rich history of the A's," said Rickey Henderson. "This 50th Anniversary team - made up of both old and new players - represents the memories created throughout the past 50 years and the excitement as we look toward the next 50."
The players will be recognized in a pregame ceremony on Opening Night, March 30, before the A's play host to the Los Angeles Angels at 7:05 p.m. Alumni players will appear throughout the season, and some of the 50th Anniversary team will appear at the 50th Anniversary Gala on March 28.
"The fans put together an incredible 50th Anniversary team to celebrate 50 years in Oakland," said A's President Dave Kaval. "We are excited to honor our past and the roles these players have had on our history and tradition."
The 50th Anniversary team features a combined seven Most Valuable Player Awards, five Cy Youngs, three Rookies of the Year, 81 All-Star Game selections, 20 Gold Gloves, and 50 World Series rings as members of the Oakland A's.
