The Oakland A's reinstated catcher Josh Phegley and outfielder Jake Smolinski from the disabled list and recalled left-handed pitcher Sam Moll and infielder Franklin Barreto from Triple-A Nashville, the club announced today.
Phegley was batting .205 with three home runs and seven RBI in 47 games when he was placed on the 10-day disabled list July 27 retroactive to July 25 with a strained left oblique. He began a rehab assignment with Nashville Aug. 16 and hit .310 with a home run and four RBI in eight games, including six at catcher and two at designated hitter.
Smolinksi began the season on the disabled list after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder March 16. The surgery included a repair of his labrum and a bursectomy procedure. Smolinksi started a rehab assignment with Single-A Stockton Aug. 12 and hit .250 in seven games before he was transferred to Nashville Aug. 24. He batted .129 in six games with the Sounds and hit .182 with a home run and 11 RBI in 13 games, all at designated hitter, with both clubs.
Barreto joins the A's for the second time as he hit .190 with two home runs and four RBI in 11 games in his Major League debut during his first stint from June 24 to July 7. He batted .304 with seven home runs and 22 RBI in 43 games with Nashville following his July 8 option and finished the Triple-A portion of his season with a .290 batting average, 15 home runs and 54 RBI in 111 games. The 21-year-old appeared in 83 games at shortstop and 25 games at second base with the Sounds and has eight games at short and three at second with the A's.
Moll was acquired from the Colorado Rockies for a player to be named later or cash on Aug. 16 and was assigned to Triple-A Nashville. He did not allow a run in six games and 7.0 innings with the Sounds after going 3-2 with a 4.18 ERA in 44 relief appearances with Triple-A Albuquerque. The 25-year-old left-hander has combined for a 3.64 ERA and .280 opponents batting average in 50 minor league games overall.
