A's Select OF Kyler Murray with 9th Pick of 2018 MLB First-Year Player Draft

The Oakland Athletics selected outfielder Kyler Murray with their first selection, 9th overall, in the 2018 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Oklahoma.
Murray, 20 (21 on Aug. 7), hit .296 (56-for-189) with 46 runs, 13 doubles, 3 triples, 10 home runs, 47 RBI, a .398 on-base percentage, and a .556 slugging mark in 51 games with the University of Oklahoma during the 2018 season.
During the 2017 summer, the right-handed hitting and throwing outfielder played 16 games for the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod Baseball League, collecting two doubles and one home run, while stealing four bases. In two seasons with the Sooners, the redshirt sophomore hit .261 (62-for-238) with 62 runs, 13 doubles, 3 triples, 10 home runs, 53 RBI and a .466 slugging mark despite getting just 49 at-bats during the 2017 season.
He appeared in seven games for the Sooners football team in 2017 after sitting out the 2016 season following his transfer from Texas A&M.
Before transferring to the University of Oklahoma prior to the spring 2016 semester, the 5-foot-11 outfielder was a quarterback at Texas A&M where he appeared in nine games during the 2015 season.
Prior to his college career, the Allen, Texas native was an accomplished Texas high school player, leading Allen High School to three straight state titles and never losing a game as a starting quarterback (43-0). He was named Mr. Texas Football Player of the Year in 2014 by Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine, National Player of the Year by Gatorade, MaxPreps and USA Today. He was the first player to play in both the Under Armour All-America football and baseball game. He was named a Perfect Game Second Team All-American at Allen High School and the Gatorade National Player of the Year in football.
His father, Kevin, lettered at Texas A&M from 1983-86 and was inducted into the A&M Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame in 2012.
The Athletics selected Murray with the 9th overall pick in the first round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft, and will also have the 50th overall pick in the second round, the 70th overall pick in Competitive Balance Round B, the 85th overall pick in the 3rd round, and will pick 9th in rounds 4-40 during the final two days of the Draft.
The Draft will resume at 1:00 p.m. (ET) on Tuesday, June 5th, when selections will be made for rounds 3-10, with one minute intervals between selections. Day three of the Draft on Wednesday, June 6th will begin at 12:00 p.m. (ET), featuring picks in rounds 11-40, with no time delay between selections.
