Alex Claudio named 2017 Texas Rangers Pitcher of the Year

Claudio, who was selected in voting by the local BBWAA chapter, emerged as the Rangers' closer over the season's final three months.

Lefthander Alex Claudio has been selected as the 2017 Texas Rangers Pitcher of the Year, it was announced today by the Dallas-Fort Worth Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America.
Claudio, who was selected in voting by the local BBWAA chapter, emerged as the Rangers' closer over the season's final three months, going 4-1 with a 2.79 ERA and 11 saves in 70 games/1 start in 2017. He ranked among the American League relief leaders in innings (T3rd, 78.2), ERA (6th, 2.50), games finished (10th, 38), and appearances (T11th, 69). Claudio earned a team high 11 saves in 14 opportunities while averaging just 13.6 pitches per inning, the lowest mark of any big league reliever.
Claudio is the ninth reliever in club history to win Pitcher of the Year honors, the first left-hander.
Claudio will be honored at the 2018 Dr Pepper Texas Rangers Awards Dinner, which takes place on Friday, January 19 at Gilley's Dallas.
