ANAHEIM, CA - The Angels today agreed to terms on a one-year contract with RHP Matt Harvey. In a corresponding move, RHP Luke Farrell has been designated for assignment. Today's announcements were made by Angels General Manager Billy Eppler.
Harvey, 29, split the 2018 season between New York (N.L.) and Cincinnati and registered 131 strikeouts across 155 innings pitched while walking 37. His 3.54 strikeout/walk rate ranked 13th in the National League and his 7.8 strikeouts per nine innings rate was his highest mark since 2015. He was traded by the Mets to Cincinnati on May 8 in exchange for C Devin Mesoraco and cash considerations.
A native of New London, CT, Harvey, was named the starting pitcher for the National League in the 2013 All-Star Game at Citi Field and finished fourth in Cy Young Award voting after finishing the year with a 9-5 record, 2.27 ERA (178.1 IP - 45 ER) and 191 strikeouts. In 2015, he was named the Comeback Player of the Year by the Sporting News and Player's Choice Awards and helped lead New York to a National League Championship. In four postseason starts, he went 2-0 with a 3.04 ERA (26.2 IP - 9 ER) and 27 strikeouts.
In six Major League seasons, Harvey has gone 41-44 with a 3.80 ERA (767.1 IP - 324 ER) and 723 strikeouts. He has averaged 8.5 strikeouts per nine innings for his career and his 3.56 strikeouts to walk ratio, ranks 11th in the N.L. since his debut in 2012. Harvey recorded 589 strikeouts through his first 100 career games, which are the third-most in Mets history behind Dwight Gooden (749) and Jacob deGrom (675).
Harvey was originally drafted by the Angels out of high school in the third round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft but elected to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was selected by the Mets in the first round (seventh overall) in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft.
