This season, every strikeout recorded by Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Chris Archer will benefit the local nonprofit organization Starting Right, Now. For every strikeout Archer logs this year, he and the Rays Baseball Foundation will each donate $25 to benefit Starting Right, Now. Fans can also join the strikeout challenge and make a pledge by visiting www.raysbaseball.com/archer.
Archer will make his third consecutive Opening Day start on Sunday, April 2 at Tropicana Field against the New York Yankees. Over the last two seasons, Archer's 485 strikeouts raised more than $35,000 to be split between Burg Baseball Inc. and Tampa RBI.
Starting Right, Now is a nonprofit organization that combats homelessness for youth through one-on-one mentoring, providing a stable home, obtaining employment, teaching financial literacy/life skills and promoting educational achievement. Founded in Hillsborough County, Starting Right, Now opened a second dormitory in South St. Petersburg in February. Archer attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony, along with President of Baseball Operations Matt Silverman, who is a board chairman for the organization.
"Starting Right, Now is so fortunate to be picked for the Archer Strikeout Campaign," said Starting Right, Now Founder Vicki Sokolik. "This funding helps SRN save homeless youth by providing them with stability and allowing them to reach for their fullest educational potential. We are fortunate to have Chris on our team. We encourage the community to help us and Rays Up our youth."
