The Houston Astros have signed second-round pick, right-handed pitcher Corbin Martin. Martin was taken with the 56th overall selection in the 2017 MLB Draft as the second of Houston's two second-round picks.
HOUSTON, TX - The Houston Astros have signed second-round pick, right-handed pitcher Corbin Martin. Martin was taken with the 56th overall selection in the 2017 MLB Draft as the second of Houston's two second-round picks. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. The official announcement was made by Astros Assistant General Manager of Scouting and Player Development Mike Elias.
Martin, 21, just wrapped up his junior season at Texas A&M University, where he posted a 7-4 record with a 3.80 ERA (37ER/87.2IP) and 95 strikeouts in 24 games (13 starts). The right-handed pitcher began the season in the Aggies bullpen before joining the starting rotation in March. In his 13 starts, Martin went 5-2 with a 3.58 ERA (28ER/70.1IP) and 69 strikeouts and helped lead Texas A&M to its 11th consecutive College World Series berth. Martin was also one of the most dominant pitchers in the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2016, the premier collegiate summer league in the country, as he gave up just two runs in 15.2 innings pitched (1.15 ERA) with three walks and 22 strikeouts in 14 total appearances. Martin is a Cypress, Texas native, and is a 2014 graduate of Cy-Ranch High School where he received All-State and District MVP honors during both his junior and senior years.
The Astros have now signed 27 of their 42 selections from the 2017 draft, including nine of their 12 selections made within the top 10 rounds.
