Blue Jays Acquire Bass And Pop

The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired RHP Anthony Bass, RHP Zach Pop, and a player to be named later from the Miami Marlins in exchange for INF Jordan Groshans.

Additionally, LHP Anthony Banda has been designated for assignment and LHP Andrew Vasquez has been claimed off outright waivers by the Philadelphia Phillies.

Bass, 34, has posted a 1.41 ERA in 45 appearances for the Marlins this season, striking out 45 batters while walking 10, en route to a 0.94 WHIP. The 6-2, 205 lb. righty rejoins the Blue Jays, having pitched in 26 games for the club during the shortened 2020 campaign. The Dearborn, MI, native was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 5th round in 2008. Over the course of his 11-year career, Bass has compiled a 14-28 record with a 3.98 ERA while pitching for seven different organizations.

Pop, 25, owns a 3.60 ERA while going 2-0 with a 1.25 WHIP in 18 games during his sophomore season in the majors. The Brampton, ON, native was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 7th round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft and made his Major League debut with the Marlins last year. The 6-4, 220 lb. reliever has pitched in 68 career MLB games, going 3-0 with a 3.98 ERA while fanning 65 batters over 74.2 innings of work.

Groshans, 22, has hit .250 with one home run and 24 RBI across 67 games for Triple-A Buffalo this season. The 6-3, 200 lb. right-handed hitter was drafted 12th overall by the Blue Jays out of Magnolia High School (TX) in 2018. Over the course of his four Minor League campaigns, the infielder has kept a .283 batting average and a .764 OPS while recording 51 doubles, 15 home runs, and 120 RBI.
