ATLANTA - The Atlanta Braves agreed to terms with LHP Rex Brothers on a one-year, non-guaranteed contract for the 2018 season, thus avoiding salary arbitration. Brothers became arbitration eligible when his Club option for the 2018 season was not exercised. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Brothers, 29, went 4-3 with a 7.23 ERA in 27 games last season, his first with the Braves. The lefty fanned 33 batters over 23.2 innings, and his 12.55 strikeouts per 9.0 innings paced all Atlanta pitchers with at least 20 appearances. He was the only reliever in the majors last season to strike out at least 30 batters in fewer than 25.0 innings.
Brothers has appeared in 313 games over a six-year major league career, compiling a 20-14 record with a 3.76 ERA, 311 strikeouts and 20 saves. He was signed by the Braves as a minor-league free agent on February 3 of this year.
The Braves have seven remaining arbitration-eligible players: INF Matt Adams, RHP Mike Foltynewicz, LHP Sam Freeman, INF/OF Jace Peterson, INF/OF Danny Santana, RHP Arodys Vizcaíno and RHP Dan Winkler.
