The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that Springfield (AA) pitcher Luke Weaver and Cardinals Dominican Summer League (Rookie) outfielder Brian Sanchez have been selected as the organization's Pitcher and Player of the Month, respectively, for the month of June.
Weaver, 22, went 4-0 with a 1.15 ERA in five starts in June, helping the Springfield Cardinals clinch the first half title in the Texas League North Division. Weaver, the Cardinals 1st round selection (27thplayer overall) in 2014 out of Florida State University, is 4-1 with a 0.96 ERA for the season, striking out 42 batters in 37.1 innings pitched with just six walks allowed.   He fanned 10 batters in 7.1 innings on June 5 at Frisco in his 2016 debut.
"Luke was impressive in his five games started in June, stated Cardinals' Director of Player Development Gary LaRocque. "He played a big part in helping the Springfield Cardinals win the first half of the Northern Division of the Texas League"
Sanchez, 20, batted .369 (31-for-84) in 21 games last month, belting six home runs while driving in 32.   The right-handed hitting outfielder, who was signed by the Cardinals as a non-drafted free-agent in November of 2014, is a native of Santo Domingo Este, Dominican Republic. He has been serving as the DSL Cardinals clean-up batter.
"Brian's strong start in the DSL, highlighted by his productive offense, has lead the DSL Cardinals in June," stated LaRocque.
The 6-2, 180-pound Sanchez enjoyed a strong showing last June as well, tallying 27 RBI. He led the 2015 DSL Cardinals with 45 RBI in his 60 games played last season.
