Baseball Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr. issued the following statement regarding the passing of longtime National League Umpire Doug Harvey, a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, who was 87:
"Hall of Famer Doug Harvey was one of the most accomplished umpires of all-time. Known for his strong presence and communication skills, he umpired some of the most memorable moments ever, including from behind the plate for Kirk Gibson's walk-off home run to open the 1988 World Series. A generation of umpires learned as a result of Doug's example, his eagerness to teach the game and his excellent timing behind the plate.
"On behalf of Major League Baseball, I send my deepest condolences to Doug's family, his friends and the umpiring community."
Harvey was a 31-year National League Umpire (1962-92), and his 4,673 career games rank fifth all-time. The California native worked six All-Star Games, seven National League Championship Series and five World Series (1968, '74, '81, '84 and '88). Harvey was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010, becoming only the 10th member of his profession to reach Cooperstown.
