HOUSTON, TX - Major League Baseball announced this afternoon that Houston Astros All-Star shortstop Carlos Correa has been named the American League Player of the Week for the week of September 25-October 1. This marks the third career Player of the Week award for Correa, and the Astros third winner this season, joining fellow All-Stars Jose Altuve (July 3-9) and George Springer (May 29-June 4).
During the week, Correa hit .520 (13x25) with four doubles, three homers, 10 RBI, eight runs scored and a 1.611 OPS (.571 OBP/1.040 SLG) in six games. He led the American League in batting average, hits, runs and RBI during the week, while ranking second in OPS, tied for second in doubles and tied for third in home runs. During the week, Correa became the first player in Astros history to record three straight games with at least three hits and three RBI, per the Elias Sports Bureau. He also became the fifth Major League shortstop since 1913 to record at least three hits and three RBI in three consecutive games, joining Hanley Ramirez (2010), Cal Ripken Jr. (1995), Al Dark (1956) and Glenn Wright (1928).
Correa was named an All-Star for the first time in his career in 2017. The 23-year-old set a single-season franchise record for home runs by a shortstop with 24, topping the previous club record of 22 he set in his rookie season in 2015. He became the first shortstop in Major League history to reach the 20-homer plateau in each of his first three seasons. Correa also led all Major League shortstops this year in batting average (.315), on-base percentage (.391), slugging percentage (.550) and OPS (.941).
This marks the third career weekly award for Correa, as he won the AL Player of the Week award for the weeks of June 20-26, 2016 and Aug. 8-14, 2016. In addition to the three Player of the Week awards won by Correa, Altuve and Springer, the Astros also took home a number of monthly awards during the 2017 season, including the April Pitcher of the Month (Dallas Keuchel), the May Pitcher of the Month (Lance McCullers Jr.), the May Player of the Month (Carlos Correa), the July Player of the Month (Jose Altuve) and the July Rookie of the Month (Yuli Gurriel).
In recognition of his American League Player of the Week award, Correa will be awarded a watch courtesy of Rockwell.
