Cubs activate C Victor Caratini from 10-day I.L.

CINCINNATI – The Chicago Cubs today activated catcher Victor Caratini off of the 10-day injured list. Catcher Taylor Davis was optioned to Triple-A Iowa after last night’s game. Caratini will make the start at first base tonight for the Cubs as they conclude their three-game series at the Cincinnati Reds.

Caratini, 25, was placed on the 10-day injured list with a fractured left hamate on April 12 and had surgery to remove the bone three days later. He saw action in nine minor league games as part of his rehab assignment, combining to bat .267 (8-for-30) with two doubles and two RBI between Single-A South Bend and Triple-A Iowa. Prior to the injury, Caratini was batting .571 (8-for-14) with three doubles, one homer, five RBI and a 1.647 OPS in six games with the Cubs this season.

The switch-hitter was a member of Chicago’s Opening Day roster for the second year in a row. In parts of the last three seasons, he is a career .256 hitter (65-for-254) with 13 doubles, four homers and 28 RBI in 113 big league contests. Caratini has caught 53 games, played 29 games at first base, three games at third base and one game in the outfield.

Davis, 29, has hit .200 (3-for-15) with one homer and four RBI in six games with the Cubs this year. With Iowa, he has batted .143 (2-for-14) with one homer and two RBI in four games.
