Cubs select RHP Anthony Bass from Triple-A, option RHP Cory Mazzoni to Iowa

The Chicago Cubs today selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Anthony Bass from Triple-A Iowa. Right-handed pitcher Cory Mazzoni has been optioned to Triple-A.

The Chicago Cubs today selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Anthony Bass from Triple-A Iowa. Right-handed pitcher Cory Mazzoni has been optioned to Triple-A.
 
Bass, who will wear uniform number 45, will be available for the Cubs tonight as they begin a three-game series at Milwaukee.
 
To make room for Bass on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Eddie Butler (right groin strain) has been transferred to the 60-day disabled list.
 
Bass, 30, is 0-1 with three saves and a 2.28 ERA (6 ER/23.2 IP) in 18 relief appearances with Iowa this season, his first in the Cubs organization. In his last 10 games since May 6, he has a 1.46 ERA (2 ER/12.1 IP) and has limited the opponent to a .599 OPS. Bass has struck out 20 batters, while walking just six, and has held right-handed batters to a .233 average (14-for-60) with no home runs this season.
 
Bass has pitched in parts of six major league seasons with the Padres (2011-13), Astros (2014) and Rangers (2015, 2017), going a combined 5-9 with three saves and a 4.60 ERA (145 ER/284.0 IP) in 131 games, including 18 starts. He spent the 2016 campaign with the Hokkaido Nippon Ham-Fighters of Nippon Professional Baseball before joining Texas last season, pitching primarily with Triple-A Round Rock while making two appearances with the Rangers.
 
Originally selected in the fifth round of the 2008 Draft by San Diego, Bass has gone 36-31 with 11 saves and a 3.55 ERA (233 ER/590.2 IP) in 171-career minor league games, including 101 starts.
 
Mazzoni, 28, is 1-0 with a 1.17 ERA (1 ER/7.2 IP) in seven relief outings with the Cubs. He has gone 3-2 with two saves and a 1.25 ERA (3 ER/21.2 IP) in 14 relief outings with Triple-A Iowa this season.
 
Butler, 27, is 0-1 with a 4.30 ERA (7 ER/14.2 IP) in six relief appearances for Chicago this season.
