D-backs Award Alek Thomas, Riley Smith With Monthly Honors

PHOENIX —The Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) named Single-A Kane County OF Alek Thomas (@athomas22) and Double-A Jackson RHP Riley Smith (@rileywade2013) the organization’s Minor League Player- and Pitcher-of-the-Month for May.

Thomas, 19, hit .337 (33-for-98)/.409 OBP/.592 SLG with 7 doubles, 3 triples, 4 home runs, 15 RBI, 24 runs scored and 11 walks in 24 games in May for the Cougars, ranking among the Midwest League leaders in OPS (3rd, 1.001), average (6th) and triples (T-2nd). Thomas’s month was highlighted by a 4-for-4 game with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored on May 22 vs. Quad Cities, which was the start of his current 10-game hitting streak (.429; 18-for-42, 5 doubles, 2 home runs, 10 RBI). A native of Chicago, Thomas was selected by the D-backs in the second-round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft out of Mount Carmel High School (Ill.). 

 Smith, 24, went 2-1 with a 0.53 ERA (2 ER in 33.2 IP), .202 opponent average, 0.98 WHIP and 24 strikeouts in 5 starts for the Generals in May. He ranked among the Southern League leaders in ERA (1st), complete games (T-1st, 1), opponent average (9th) and WHIP (9th). Smith ended the month with an 18.0-inning streak without allowing an earned run. A native of Lufkin, Texas, he was drafted by Arizona in the 24th round in 2016 out of Louisiana State University.

 Every month during the season, the D-backs Player Development staff chooses the player and pitcher most deserving of the honors based on nominations from coaches at each affiliate along with input from the Minor League coordinators.
