D-backs Recall Taylor Clarke From Triple-A Reno, Designate John Ryan Murphy for Assignment

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled RHP Taylor Clarke (@t_clarke9) from Triple-A Reno. To make room on the 25-man roster, the D-backs designated C John Ryan Murphy for assignment.

 Clarke, 26, will make his second Major League start this afternoon @ Giants. He made his first career start on May 7 @ Rays, taking the loss after allowing 2 runs on 7 hits over 6.0 innings. He made his Major League debut on April 20 @ Cubs, earning a save after throwing 3.0 scoreless innings. He also recorded a hit in his lone plate appearance, making him the first pitcher since the save became an official statistic in 1969 to record a save and a hit in his first career game [source: Elias Sports Bureau].

 In 7 starts for Reno this season, Clarke has gone 3-1 with a 7.22 ERA (27 ER in 33.2 IP). He entered 2019 as the D-backs' No. 10 prospect by MLB.com and was tabbed by Baseball America as possessing the Best Control in the system.

 Clarke, over parts of 5 seasons in the D-backs’ system, has appeared in 101 games (88 starts) and is 40-27 with a 3.66 ERA (204 ER in 501.0 IP), .244 opponent average and 432 strikeouts. In 40 starts at Reno from 2017-19, he is 19-11 with a 4.64 ERA (113 ER in 219.1 IP) and 180 strikeouts.

 Clarke was the D-backs' third-round selection in the 2015 draft out of College of Charleston, the highest draft pick in school history.

 Murphy, 28, was hitting .177 (11-for-62) with 3 doubles, 4 home runs and 7 RBI in 25 games for the D-backs this season. In parts of 3 seasons in Arizona, he hit .195 (54-for-277) with 13 doubles, 13 home runs and 32 RBI in 117 games.
