Diamondbacks roster moves for April 21

April 21st, 2019

The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled RHP Jimmie Sherfy from Triple-A Reno today, after optioning RHP Taylor Clarke to Reno following yesterday’s game. The D-backs’ 40-man roster is at 40.

Sherfy, 27, has 5 relief appearances at Reno, going 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA (2 ER in 5.1 IP) and 9 strikeouts. For the D-backs, he has held opponents scoreless in 24 of 26 career outings, with a 1.00 ERA (3 ER in 27.0 IP), .144 opponent average and 26 strikeouts. He has held opponents scoreless in 10 of 11 career road games (2 ER in 13.0 IP).

Clarke, 25, made his Major League debut yesterday @ Cubs, recording the save with 3.0 scoreless inning as well as collecting his first hit (an infield single in the eighth inning). Courtesy Elias Sports Bureau, since the save rule became official in 1969, Clarke is the first pitcher with a save and a hit in his debut; Taylor Clarke and Jon Duplantier are the first pitchers to record saves of 3.0-or-more innings in their Major League debuts in the same season (prior to 2019, no pitcher had done it since the Rays’ Dale Thayer in 2009); and Clarke became the sixth D-back pitcher to get a hit in his debut, eighth D-back pitcher to get a hit in his first plate appearance and ninth D-back pitcher to get a hit in his first at-bat.

Clarke, in 3 starts for Reno, is 1-1 with a 7.36 ERA (12 ER in 14.2 IP). In 2018, in 27 starts for Reno, he went 13-8 with a 4.03 ERA, .254 opponent average and 125 strikeouts.
