D-backs select Bryce Jarvis and Slade Cecconi on first day of Major League Baseball’s 2020 First-Year Player Draft

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks selected RHP Bryce Jarvis (@BryceJarvis28) with the 18th overall selection in the 2020 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft and RHP Slade Cecconi (@slade_cecconi) with their Competitive Balance A pick (No. 33).

Bryce Jarvis (Round 1; No. 18)
RHP │ B/T: L/R │ Age: 22 (Dec. 26, 1997) │ 6-2, 195 │ Duke University

• Went 13-4 with 2 saves, a 2.81 ERA (47 ER in 150.1 IP), .190 opponent average and 201 strikeouts in 48 appearances (20 starts) over 3 seasons with Duke University (2018-20).

• Is the highest-drafted player in Blue Devil history (previous: Marcus Stroman, No. 22 by Blue Jays in 2012).

• In a shortened junior season in 2020, he was named a Collegiate Baseball First-Team All-American after going 3-1 with a 0.67 ERA (2 ER in 27.0 IP), .120 opponent average and 40 strikeouts (2 walks) in 4 starts, the 13th Duke player to earn first-team honors.

• Threw a perfect game on Feb. 21 vs. Cornell with a career-high 15 strikeouts (94 pitches).

• As a sophomore in 2019, he made 19 appearances (11 starts), going 5-2 with 1 save, a 3.81 ERA (32 ER in 75.2 IP), .239 opponent average and 94 strikeouts (11.18 K/9.0 IP).

• Posted a 0.60 ERA (1 ER in 15.0 IP) in 2 starts in the 2019 NCAA Tournament…in the Super Regional @ Vanderbilt University, he tossed 7.0 innings and allowed 1 run (5 H, 4 BB, 9 K).

• Selected by the Yankees in the 37th round of the 2019 draft but did not sign.

• As a freshman in 2018, he made 25 appearances (5 starts), going 5-1 with 1 save, a 2.45 ERA (13 ER in 47.2 IP), .142 opponent average and 67 strikeouts (12.65 K/9.0 IP).

• Is a 2017 graduate of Brentwood (Tenn.) Academy…as a senior, earned Rawlings-Perfect Game Honorable Mention All-America and Southeast All-Region Second-Team honors, along with being named the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association Div II-AA Player of the Year.

• Father, Kevin, was the Reds’ 21st-round pick in the 1991 draft and played 12 seasons in the Major Leagues with the Reds (1994-97), Twins (1997), Tigers (1997), A's (1999), Rockies (2000, '04), Padres (2001-03), Mariners (2004), Cardinals (2005), D-backs (2006) and Red Sox (2006)…he made 5 appearances (1 start) in 2006 for the D-backs, and worked for Arizona as a scout from 2007-10.

Slade Cecconi (Competitive Balance A; No. 33)
RHP │ B/T: R/R │ Age: 20 (June 24, 1999) │ 6-4, 220 │ University of Miami (Fla.)

• Was 7-5 with a 4.09 ERA (46 ER in 101.1 IP) and 119 strikeouts (25 walks) in 21 games (17 starts) in 2 seasons (2019-20) with the University of Miami (Fla.).

• Entered 2020 as a Baseball America Third-Team All-American selection.

• In 4 starts during his shortened sophomore campaign in 2020, was 2-1 with a 3.80 ERA (9 ER in 21.1 IP), .190 opponent average and 30 strikeouts (7 walks).

• Earned Freshman All-America honors by Collegiate Baseball in 2019 after going 5-4 with a 4.16 ERA (37 ER in 80.0 IP) and 89 strikeouts (18 walks) in 17 games (13 starts).

• Is a 2018 graduate of Trinity Preparatory School in Winter Park, Fla…named a 2018 Under Armour and Perfect Game All-American, along with a Rawlings First-Team All-American.

• Selected by the Orioles in the 38th round of the 2018 draft but did not sign.
