Detroit Tigers Foundation presents the 38th Annual MHSBCA High School All-Star Game at Comerica Park

Game features Michigan’s best high school baseball players, the Annual MHSBCA Hall of Fame Induction and recognition of the 2019 Assistant Coaches of the Year

DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers Foundation, an affiliate of Ilitch Charities, in conjunction with the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association (MHSBCA) will host the 38th annual East vs. West High School All-Star Game on Thursday, June 20 at 7:00 p.m. at Comerica Park.

Tickets will be available for purchase at the Comerica Park Box Office beginning at 10:00 a.m. on the day of the game, and are $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 12-and-under. Youth baseball players who attend the game in their uniform will receive a free ticket at the box office. Admission also includes a special game program. Gate A on Witherell Street will open at 6:00 p.m. Fans can park in Lot 1, Lot 2 or the Tigers Garage for $10­. All credentialed media will receive complementary parking for the event in the Tigers Garage.

Three players selected to participate in the All-Star Game were also selected in the 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Chris Mokma went to the Miami Marlins in the 12th round (351st overall), while West All-Star teammates Adam Berghorst and Cameron Wagoner were selected by the Texas Rangers. Berghorst was taken in the 14th round (415th overall), and Wagoner in the 22nd round (655th overall). All three players drafted are not currently signed to professional contracts, making them eligible to play in the game.

In-Game Promotions and Events

  • There will be five 2019 MHSBCA Hall of Fame Inductees: Jim Caserta (West Ottawa/Holland Christian), Bill Blakely (Gull Lake High School), Christopher Andrews (Portage Northern High School), Dave VanNoord (Hudsonville High School) and Bill Whitely (Sturgis High School).
  • The MHSBCA will recognize the Assistant Coaches of the Year in a pregame on-field ceremony. Honorees include: Anthony Brinson (Woodhaven High School), David Fox (Notre Dame Prep High School), Ray Howard (Gibraltar Carlson High School), Tim Roberts (Millington High School), Jim Sombati (Taylor Prep High School) and Nate Varnersdeel (Kalamazoo Central High School).
  • The ceremonial first pitch will be thrown by retired Grosse Pointe North High School Baseball and Football Coach Frank Sumbera, recipient of the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association Service Award. Sumbera, who has coached in Michigan for 49 years, is a two-time state champion and the third-winningest baseball coach in state history with 1,097 career wins. He was inducted into the MHSBCA Hall of Fame in 1990 after serving over 40 years as a board member. As one of the “Founding Fathers” of the organization that formed in the 1980s, Coach Sumbera was formerly the MHSBCA President, but his leadership as Clinic Chairman for over 35 years has been directly responsible for the promotion and growth of high school baseball in Michigan.
