Diamondbacks recall Caleb Joseph

The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled C Caleb Joseph (@EutawBackstop) from Triple-A Reno. Following last night’s game, the D-backs optioned RHP Jon Duplantier to Reno. 

Joseph, 32, was hitting .400 (4-for-10)/.538 OBP/.800 SLG with 1 double, 1 home run, 1 RBI, 3 walks and 2 runs scored in 4 games for the Aces this season. He spent the majority of 2018 with the Orioles, throwing out 32.2-percent of attempted basestealers (19-of-59), and tying for the Major League lead with 11 double plays as catcher (also: Salvador Pérez/KC). Additionally, he hit .219 (58-for-265) with 14 doubles, 3 home runs and 17 RBI in 82 games with Baltimore, and .273 (24-for-88) with 2 homers and 14 RBI in 24 games with Triple-A Norfolk.

Joseph garnered American League Rawlings Gold Glove Award® consideration in 2015 and ’17, receiving as many as 7 votes in 2015 and finishing fifth in the balloting. He also ranks ninth among all active catchers [min. 375 games] with a 29.4-caught stealing percentage (74-for-252), ahead of 2018 All-Stars J.T. Realmuto (11th, 28.7), Wilson Ramos (12th, 27.1) and Buster Posey (13th, 27.0).

The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder played in 5 Major League seasons with the Orioles from 2014-18 and batted .224 (272-for-1,217) with 56 doubles, 4 triples, 31 home runs and 122 RBI in 402 games.

Joseph signed with Arizona as a free agent on February 13. He was selected by Baltimore in the seventh round of the 2008 draft from Lipscomb University.

Duplantier, 24, threw 4.0 scoreless innings with 3 strikeouts across 2 outings with the D-backs, including a 3.0-inning save in his Major League debut on April 1 @ Padres.
