Colorado Rockies, right-handed pitcher German Marquez agree on contract

DENVER -- The Colorado Rockies announced today that they have agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher German Marquez on a contract extension that covers the 2019-23 seasons with an option for the 2024 season.

The news conference will take place in the interview room at Coors Field. The Rockies request that all media who wish to attend Saturday’s news conference and who do not have Rockies season credentials apply for daily credentials at credentials.mlb.com. Please note that same-day credential requests will be possible and that the deadline will be lifted.

• Marquez, 24, has made two starts this season (1-0) and has allowed one run over a combined 13.0 innings pitched with six walks and 14 strikeouts … went 14-11 with a 3.77 ERA (196.0 IP, 82 ER), 57 walks and 230 strikeouts in 2018 … the 230 strikeouts ranked fourth in the National League, and were a new single-season franchise record … was named the National League Pitcher of the Month for September of last season after going 3-1 with a 2.14 ERA (33.2 IP, 8 ER), five walks and 48 strikeouts.

• Across parts of four seasons with the Rockies, is 27-19 with a 4.00 ERA (391.2 IP, 174 ER), 118 walks and 406 strikeouts … recorded his 400th career strikeout in his last start, reaching the plateau in the fewest number of starts (67) in franchise history … the San Felix, Venezuela, native was originally acquired by the Rockies along with left-handed pitcher Jake McGee via trade with Tampa Bay in exchange for outfielder Corey Dickerson and Minor League infielder Kevin Padlo on Jan. 28, 2016.

• Won his first career Silver Slugger award in 2018 after batting .300 (18-for-60) with four runs scored, one home run and five RBI … his 18 hits were the most for a pitcher since Zack Greinke recorded 19 in 2013 … Marquez became just the second Rockies pitcher to ever win a Silver Slugger, joining Mike Hampton (2001-02).

The Rockies currently have 38 players on their 40-man roster.
