The San Francisco Giants have named Curt Young the club's Major League pitching coach and Alonzo Powell the club's Major League hitting coach, club Senior Vice President and General Manager Bobby Evans announced today.
Young, 57, had been the pitching coach for the A's in 15 of the last 16 seasons, with the only exception being 2011 when he worked for the Red Sox. He was the longest-serving employee in uniform in Oakland A's history; he played for the A's from 1983-91 and served two stints as pitching coach, from 2003-2010 and from 2012-2017. His 23 years in an Oakland uniform surpassed the tenures of Dave Duncan, Mike Gallego and Dave McKay, who each spent 15 years with Oakland as players and coaches.
Under Young's guidance, the A's finished second in the American League in ERA in three straight seasons from 2012-14. The 2014 club posted a 3.22 ERA, which was the seventh lowest in Oakland history and the lowest since 1990 (3.18). Young helped 13 A's pitchers reach the American League All-Star team and closers Huston Street (2005) and Andrew Bailey (2009) earned AL Rookie of the Year honors during his tenure.
Young, who won a World Series with the A's in 1989, compiled a 69-53 record and a 4.31 ERA in 251 games, 162 starts, in an 11-year Major League career that included stints with Oakland (1983-91, 93), Kansas City (1992) and the New York Yankees (1992).
Powell joins the Giants' staff after having worked the previous two seasons as the assistant hitting coach for the 2017 World Series champion Houston Astros. Powell, who was born in San Francisco and attended Lincoln High School, has been in professional baseball for 35 years, having coached for 16 years (2002-17) following a 19-year playing career (1983-2001). Powell has spent a total of seven seasons (2010, 2012-17) on a Major League coaching staff and saw big league action in two seasons as a player (1987, 1991). He was originally signed by the Giants as an amateur free agent in 1983.
In his brief stint with Houston, the 53-year-old Powell helped the Astros to be one of the top offensive teams in the big leagues. In 2017, the Astros led the Majors in runs scored (896), hits (1,581), doubles (346), batting average (.282), on-base pct. (.346), slugging pct. (.478) and OPS (.823) while striking out fewer than any club (1,087). Prior to joining Houston, Powell served in the same role for the Padres from 2012-15.
The final part of Bruce Bochy's 2018 coaching staff will be finalized at a later date, including the hiring of a new assistant hitting coach.
