Indians open 2019-2020 International Signing period; Signing 15 players

July 2nd, 2019

CLEVELAND, OH -- The Cleveland Indians today announced the signing of 15 international amateur free agents for the 2019-20 signing period.

The club’s international signing class, which was announced by Senior Director of International Scouting Paul Gillispie, includes players from across Latin America, including eight from the Dominican Republic, four from Venezuela, two from Panama, and one from Colombia.

“This is an incredibly exciting time for these players, their families and trainers, all of whom should be incredibly proud,” said Gillispie. “We’re thrilled to be able to welcome these 15 players into our organization, after our staff worked diligently over the last several years to get to know the best young players around the world.”

Among the club’s signings, OF Luis Durango, INF Maick Collado and INF Jose Devers have baseball bloodlines. Durango’s father, Luis, played professionally for 13 seasons, including parts of 3 years in the Major Leagues with the San Diego Padres and Houston Astros. Devers’ cousin is Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers. In addition, the brothers of Devers and Collado, Jose and Offerman, respectively, are presently farmhands for the Miami Marlins and Kansas City Royals.

Rodriguez and Vargas signed 2019 contracts and will be eligible to begin their professional careers this season; the other players signed 2020 contracts.

The international signing period opens each year on July 2 and players are able to sign through June 15 of the subsequent year.
