Washington Nationals outfielder Juan Soto has been voted National League Rookie of the Month for September, and designated hitter/starting pitcher Shohei Ohtani has been voted American League Rookie of the Month for the sixth month of the 2018 season. The announcement regarding the pair of rookies was made earlier today on MLB Network.
Soto posted a slash line of .283/.383/.525 with 15 runs scored, 28 hits, six doubles, six home runs, 20 RBI, 16 walks and three stolen bases over 26 games played to claim his third NL Rookie of the Month Award this season (also April and July). During his strong month, Juan finished first among NL rookies (min. 20 at-bats) in doubles, home runs and RBI; tied for first in walks; tied for third in runs scored and stolen bases; fourth in hits; fifth in on-base percentage; and tied for fifth in slugging percentage. The dynamic outfielder is the first National Leaguer to earn three Rookie of the Month Awards in the same season since Jason Bay during his Rookie of the Yearwinning 2004 season.
On September 11th against the Philadelphia Phillies, Soto batted 3-for-4 with three runs scored, a double, two home runs and four RBI to propel Washington to a 7-6 victory. The outing was Soto's third multi-homer game of the season (also June 13th and June 29th), which is the most by a teenager in Major League history. On Saturday against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field, the rookie phenom went 2-for-4 with a double, home run and four RBI. Juan's 22 round-trippers this season matched his teammate Bryce Harper (2012) for the second-most home runs by a teenager in MLB history, trailing only Tony Conigliaro (24 HR, 1964). In addition, the Dominican Republic native reached 70 RBI on the season following the performance, the second-most by a player younger than 20-years-old in Baseball history, trailing only Phil Cavarretta (82 RBI, 1935). The 19-year-old finished his rookie campaign with a .292/.406/.517 slash line to go along with 77 runs scored, 25 doubles, 22 home runs and 70 RBI. Soto is the first teenager in MLB history to register at least 20 doubles and 20 home runs while posting a .400-or-better on-base percentage.
Others receiving votes for NL Rookie of the Month included last month's NL Rookie of the Month Ronald Acuña Jr. (.303, 20 R, 12 XBH, 16 RBI) of the Atlanta Braves; starting pitcher Walker Buehler (1-1, 1.95 ERA, 32.1 IP, 42 SO) of the Los Angeles Dodgers; pitcher Corbin Burnes (4-0, 1.93 ERA, 14.0 IP, 11 SO) of the Milwaukee Brewers; and second baseman Jeff McNeil (.340, 18 R, 9 XBH, 9 RBI) of the New York Mets.
In recognition of their Rookie of the Month Awards, Juan Soto and Shohei Ohtani will each receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, for their accomplishments.
