October 30th, 2025

The Pittsburgh Pirates today named Konnor Griffin the organization’s Honus Wagner Player of the Year. The announcement was made by Director of Coaching and Player Development Michael Chernow.

Griffin is currently rated by both Baseball America and MLB Pipeline as the No. 1 prospect in baseball. He was named Baseball America’s Minor League Player of the Year, becoming the second Pirates farmhand to win the award, joining pitcher Mike Bielecki (1984). He also became one of five players to be recognized as both Baseball America’s High School Player of the Year and Minor League Player of the Year, joining Joe Mauer, Byron Buxton, Bobby Witt Jr. and Jackson Holliday.

Griffin, who was promoted from Greensboro to Altoona on August 18, was recognized as the South Atlantic League’s “Top MLB Prospect” at the conclusion of his first professional season. During his time with the Grasshoppers (June 10-August 17), he led the league in batting (.325), hits (63), stolen bases (33), runs scored (48), OBP (.432), slugging (.510), OPS (.942) and total bases (99). Griffin was also riding a 24-game on-base streak at the time he earned a promotion to Altoona.

Griffin’s 65 stolen bases were the most by a Pirates minor-league player since Pedro Powell (67) in 2007, while his 117 runs scored were the most by a Pittsburgh farmhand since Robbie Grossman (127) in 2011. He also finished the season ranked first among all full-season Pirates minor leaguers in batting (.333), hits (161), RBI (94), runs scored (117), OBP (.415), slugging (.527), OPS (.942) and total bases (255).

Griffin finished the season ranked second among all full-season players in Minor League Baseball in runs scored, while also ranking fourth in batting, fifth in both hits and total bases, seventh in OPS, tied for seventh in RBI and eighth in stolen bases.

Griffin, who was selected ninth overall by the Pirates in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft out of Jackson Preparatory School in Flowood, Mississippi, entered 2025 as the No. 57 prospect in the game, according to Baseball America. He was also tabbed by Baseball America as the “Best Athlete” and “Best Defensive Outfielder” among the 2024 high-school draft class.
