A’s Liam Hendriks named American League All-Star

SEATTLE, Wash. – Liam Hendriks of the Oakland Athletics has been selected to the American League All-Star Team by Major League Baseball as a replacement for Tampa Bay’s Charlie Morton for the 90th Major League Baseball All-Star Game on Tuesday, July 9 at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio. It is his first career All-Star selection.

Hendriks joins teammate Matt Chapman, who was elected on the player ballot, as the A’s representatives at this year’s All-Star Game.

Hendriks, 30, is 3-0 with 3 saves and a 1.29 ERA (7 ER, 48.2 IP) with 60 strikeouts in 40 games, including two starts with Oakland this season. As a reliever, he has a 0.96 ERA (5 ER, 46.2 IP) with 58 strikeouts and a .193 opponents batting average in 38 appearances.

He leads Major League relievers in ERA (0.96), ranks third among American League relievers in fewest home runs per nine innings (0.19), fourth in strikeouts (58), fifth in innings pitched (46.2) and fifth in opponents slugging percentage (.261). He currently has a career-high and A’s season-high tying 14.2 consecutive scoreless inning streak and has not allowed a run in 26 of his last 28 appearances (3 ER in 33.2 IP, 0.80 ERA).

He was named American League Reliever of the Month for June, going 1-0 with 2 saves and a 0.60 ERA (1 ER, 15.0 IP) with 22 strikeouts in 14 relief appearances.

In nine Major League seasons, he is 15-22 with four saves and a 4.35 ERA (220 ER, 454.2 IP) with 425 strikeouts in 285 games, including 44 starts with Minnesota (2011-13, Toronto (2014, 2015), Kansas City (2014), and Oakland (2016-current).
