SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that the Mariners have acquired right-handed pitcher Mike Wright from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for minor league infielder Ryne Ogren.
Today’s transactions leave the Mariners Major League, 40-man, roster at 40 players.
Wright, 29, was designated for assignment by Baltimore on Sunday (April 21). In 10 relief appearances with the Orioles this season, he was 0-1 with 1 save (2 opportunities) with a 9.45 ERA (14 ER, 13.1 IP) with 14 strikeouts and 7 walks. Wright allowed 13 of his 14 runs in 4 outings (6.0 innings). In his other 6 games, he was 1-for-1 in save opportunities with a 1.23 ERA (1 ER, 7.1 IP) with 10 strikeouts and 4 walks.
Wright has appeared in parts of 5 Major League seasons with Baltimore (2015-19), compiling a career record of 10-12 with 1 save and a 5.95 ERA (160 ER, 242.0 IP) with 192 strikeouts and 94 walks in 101 career games (23 starts). He made his Major League debut with the Orioles on May 17, 2015 vs. the Angels. He was originally selected by Baltimore in the 3rd round of the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of East Carolina University.
Ogren, 22, is batting .146 (6x41) with 4 runs, 1 double, 1 home run, 3 RBI and 3 walks in 11 games with Single-A West Virginia this season.
Ogren made his pro debut with Short-Season-A Everett last season after being selected by the Mariners in the 12th round of the 2018 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Elon University. He hit .250 (47x188) with 26 runs, 9 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs, 31 RBI and 23 walks in 55 games with the AquaSox last season. He also appeared in 1 game with Triple-A Tacoma in 2018.
