Mariners acquire catcher Tom Murphy from Giants

Mariners send Minor League right-hander Jesus Ozoria to San Francisco

Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that the Mariners have acquired catcher Tom Murphy from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for Minor League right-hander Jesus Ozoria. In order to make room on Seattle’s Major League, 25-man roster, the club has optioned catcher David Freitas to AAA Tacoma.

Seattle’s Major League, 40-man, roster is now at 40.

Murphy will be in uniform (#2) and available for tonight’s (7:10 pm PT) game vs. the Boston Red Sox at T-Mobile Park.

Murphy, 27 (turns 28 April 3), went to camp this spring with the Colorado Rockies, but was claimed off waivers by San Francisco on March 25. The Giants designated him for assignment on March 28 prior to trading him to Seattle. Murphy split the 2018 season between the Colorado Rockies and AAA Albuquerque. He appeared in 37 games with Colorado, hitting .226 (21x93) with 7 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs and 11 RBI. In 64 games with Albuquerque he hit .258 (61x264) with 16 doubles, 3 triples, 17 home runs and 49 RBI and posted a .568 slugging percentage (.901 OPS).

Murphy was originally selected by the Rockies in the 3rd round of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University at Buffalo, State University of New York. He made his Major League debut with Colorado on Sept. 12, 2015. In parts of four (2015-2018) Major League seasons, he’s combined to hit .219 (43x196) with 11 doubles, 1 triple, 10 home runs and 34 RBI in 81 games. In 875 career AAA plate appearances, Murphy has posted a slash-line of .286 average/.335 on-base percentage/.567 slugging percentage.

Ozoria, 20, made his professional debut with the DSL Mariners in 2017 after being signed on March 31, 2017. He was 0-2, 6.75 in 6 games (5 starts) in the Dominican in 2017. In 2018 he posted a record of 5-3 with a 2.19 ERA (12 ER, 49.1 IP) and 2 saves in 14 games (5 starts) in the Dominican Summer League.

Freitas, 30, has appeared in one game with Seattle this season, starting last night’s home opener. In 36 games with Seattle last season, David hit .218 (24x110) with 11 runs, 8 doubles, 1 home run, 5 RBI and 8 walks. He had four separate stints with the club: March 30-May 27; May 30-June 18; July 5-22; and Sept. 1-end of season. In 39 games (over three stints) with AAA Tacoma, hit .349 (51x146) with 15 runs, 12 doubles, 1 triple, 4 home runs, 23 RBI and 17 walks.

 The 6-foot-2, 240-pound catcher was claimed off waivers by Seattle from Atlanta on October 27, 2017. In parts of 3 Major League seasons with the Braves (2017) and Mariners (2018-19), he is a career .214 (24x112) hitter with 12 runs, 8 doubles, 1 home run, 8 RBI and 9 walks in 43 games.
