Mariners add RHP Sam Tuivailala to the active roster

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:

Sam Tuivailala, RHP, reports to club.
Casey Lawrence, RHP, optioned to AAA Tacoma.
Tuivailala (#62) will be in uniform and available for today's (1:07 pm PT) game vs. the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium.
Tuivailala (pronounced "too-ee-vai-lull-lah"), 25, was acquired by the Mariners in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Seth Elledge on July 27. Tuivailala was 3-3 with 4 holds and a 3.69 ERA (13 ER, 31.2 IP) in 31 games with the Cardinals this season. He has 21 scoreless outings in his 31 appearances, and has allowed 1 R or fewer in 29 of his 31 games. "Tui" has limited right-handed hitters to a .230 (17x74) average with just 2 extra-base hits (2B, HR). He has worked more than 1.0 inning 8 times and has a 1.93 ERA (3 ER, 14.0 IP) in those games.
In 2017, Tuivailala was 3-3 with a 2.55 ERA in 37 games with the Cardinals, all in relief. In parts of four Major League seasons (2014-current), he is 6-7, 3.65 (40 ER, 98.2 IP) in 96 relief appearances. Sam was the Cardinals 3rd round selection in the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Tuivailala was converted from shortstop to pitcher in 2012 and made the jump from rookie ball to the Majors in just 87 appearances, debuting vs. the Reds on Sept. 9, 2014.
Lawrence, 30, has appeared in three stints with the Mariners this season (also: 3/28-4/14, 5/1-12 and 7/13-28), going 0-0 with a 8.16 ERA (13 ER, 14.1 IP) in 7 relief appearances. He allowed 4 runs on 6 hits over a season-high 4.1 innings in the Mariners 5-11 loss vs. the Angels last night. The 6-foot, 175-pound right-hander was named to his first career Opening Day roster after recording a 1.80 ERA (3 ER, 15.0 IP) with 17 strikeouts and 2 walks in 6 games (2 starts) with Seattle during Spring Training. Lawrence is 6-3 with 1 saves and a 2.81 ERA (23 ER, 73.2 IP) in 14 games, 11 starts with AAA Tacoma.
In parts of 2 Major League seasons with the Blue Jays (2017) and Mariners (2017-c), he is 2-3 with a 6.72 ERA (52 ER, 69.2 IP) with 62 strikeouts and 30 walks in 34 games (2 starts). He was claimed off waivers by the Mariners from Toronto on May 11, 2017. The native of McSherrytown, PA, made his Major League debut with the Blue Jays on April 8, 2017 at Tampa Bay. Lawrence was originally signed by Toronto as a non-drafted free agent on June 15, 2010.
