Mariners turn back the clock to 1969 to pay tribute to the Seattle Pilots

June 22 game features throwback uniforms and a Pilots cap giveaway for fans

June 17th, 2019

Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. ABC TV premiered The Brady Bunch, which would go on to become an enduring pop culture phenomenon. Seattle’s own Jimi Hendrix electrified Woodstock with his searing rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. And Major League Baseball arrived in the Pacific Northwest with the expansion Seattle Pilots.

On June 22, the Mariners will Turn Back the Clock at T-Mobile Park to 1969 and celebrate the lone season of their MLB predecessors. Mariners players will wear Pilots uniforms and the first 20,000 fans will receive a replica cap, complete with “scrambled eggs” on the bill, courtesy of Alaska Airlines. Game time against the Baltimore Orioles is 1:10 p.m.

Scheduled to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the game is Gary Bell, who pitched a complete game, 7-0 win over the Chicago White Sox on April 11, 1969, the Pilots first home game at Sicks’ Seattle Stadium.

In addition to the throw-back uniforms, the atmosphere at T-Mobile Park will evoke the sights and sounds of a game played 50 years ago. Organist Jerry Frank will play live music between innings, a commemorative scorecard will be available, and bags of popcorn will be just 50-cents.

Jimi Hendrix Tribute

Saturday’s game will also feature a special tribute to Seattle’s own Jimi Hendrix, who leapt to world-wide fame when he opened his set at the Woodstock music festival with a now iconic solo instrumental rendition of the National Anthem. One-thousand fans who purchased a now sold out special ticket offer will receive a limited edition bobblehead of Hendrix wearing a Pilots jersey. Jimi’s younger sister, Janie, is scheduled to be at T-Mobile Park and will recognized on MarinersVision during the game.
