The New York Mets today announced their 2018 major league coaching staff. Gary DiSarcina will join the staff as Manager Mickey Callaway's bench coach, Dave Eiland was named the pitching coach, Pat Roessler has been promoted from assistant hitting coach to hitting coach, Glenn Sherlock will return as the third base coach and catching instructor, Ruben Amaro Jr. will serve as the club's first base coach and outfielder instructor. He will also oversee the base running responsibilities. Ricky Bones will return as the bullpen coach and Tom Slater will join the staff as the assistant hitting coach.
Gary DiSarcina, 49, was Boston's bench coach in 2017. He previously was the third base coach for the Angels (2014-2015) and the first base coach for the Angels (2016). DiSarcina played 12 years (1989-2000) in the majors with the Angels as an infielder, hitting .258 in 1,086 games and was an All-Star in 1995. DiSarcina managed four years in the minors from 2007-2009 and in 2013 all in Boston's farm system. He posted winning records in each of those four years and following the 2013 season, Baseball America named him the Minor League Manager of the Year. A native of Billerica, MA, he was inducted into the UMass Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.
Dave Eiland, 51, has worked as a pitching coach in the majors for nine seasons, capturing two World Series titles (2009 and 2015). Eiland spent the previous six seasons (2012-2017) as the pitching coach for the Kansas City Royals. The Royals led the AL in ERA in 2013 (3.45 ERA) while ranking in the top five in bullpen ERA in five of the last six years. Eiland was the Yankees pitching coach from 2008-2010, including the 2009 World Series championship. In 2011, he was a special assistant to Executive VP of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman with Tampa Bay. He worked in the Yankees minor league system as a pitching coach from 2003-2007. Eiland pitched in parts of 10 seasons in the majors with the Yankees (1988-1991, 1995), Padres (1992-1993) and Devil Rays (1998-2000). He played baseball and football at the University of Florida in 1985 before transferring to the University of South Florida in 1986.
Pat Roessler, 57, was New York's assistant hitting coach from 2015-2017 prior to his promotion. The Mets set franchise home run records in each of the last two years. Roessler also served as a major league hitting coach for the Montreal Expos from 2000-2001 and in 2005, 2012 and 2013 he was the Yankees hitting coordinator. He was the Yankees Director of Player Development from September, 2004-2014. Roessler also worked as a hitting coach in the minors with the Expos (1995-1997 and White Sox (1988-1994). He was a member of Arizona's 1980 College World Series champions.
Glenn Sherlock, 57, will begin his second season with the Mets after spending the previous 19 years on the Arizona Diamondbacks coaching staff, working as a bench coach, bullpen coach, third base coach and catching coach. Sherlock managed three seasons in the Yankees minor league organization from 1990-1992. He is a former minor league catcher with the Astros and Yankees.
Ruben Amaro Jr., 52, served as the Red Sox first base coach for the last two years, his first coaching experience at any level. Amaro, Jr. was the Senior VP and General Manager of the Philadelphia Phillies from November, 2008-September, 2015. Under his leadership, the Phillies won three straight NL East titles (2009-2011). Prior to that, he was the Phillies Assistant GM from 1999-2008, working under Ed Wade and Pat Gillick. Amaro Jr. played eight seasons in the majors as an outfielder with Angels (1991), Phillies (1992-1993, 1996-1998) and Indians (1994-1995). He was teammates with DiSarcina in Double-A (Midland-1989), Triple-A (Edmonton-1990-1991) and California (1991). Amaro Jr. was a member of Stanford's 1987 College World Series championship team. His father, Ruben Amaro Sr., spent parts of 11 seasons in the majors with Cardinals (1958), Phillies (1960-1965), Yankees (1966-1968) and Angels (1969).
Ricky Bones, 48, has been New York's bullpen coach since the 2012 season. Bones was the pitching coach for Puerto Rico during the 2017 and 2013 World Baseball Classic. He was a pitching coach in the Mets minor league system from 2006-2011. He pitched 11 years in the majors with San Diego (1991), Milwaukee (1992-1996), Yankees (1996), Cincinnati (1997), Kansas City (1997-1998), Baltimore (1999) and Florida (2000-2001). Bones was named to the AL All-Star team in 1994.
Tom Slater, 49, has coached in the Yankees minor league system for the last nine years, including as the hitting coach for Trenton (AA) of the Eastern League last season. He was the hitting coach with Tampa (A) of the Florida State League from 2015-2016. Slater managed the Staten Island Yankees to the 2011 New York-Penn League championship. He also managed the Gulf Coast League Yankees from 2009-2010, winning the title in 2009. Prior to joining the Yankees, he coached college baseball for 17 years, including stints at Auburn University (1995-2000, 2005-2008) and the University of Florida (2004). Slater was the hitting coach and third base coach for the 2006 USA National team that won the Gold Medal at the World University Championship.
