The New York Mets announced Thursday that the club has signed left-handed pitcher Luis Avilán to a minor league contract and invited him to Major League Spring Training.
 
Avilán, 29, has played in parts of seven seasons in the major leagues with the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago White Sox and Philadelphia Phillies. He split the 2018 season between the White Sox and Phillies, combining to go 2-1 with two saves, a 3.77 ERA (19 earned runs/45.1 innings) with 18 walks and 51 strikeouts in 70 appearances.
 
"Luis is a left-handed quality major league reliever who addresses another offseason priority," said General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen. "We are pleased to see these types of proven players want to be a part of what we are trying to build."
 
In 2018, Avilán held left-handed batters to a .220 (18-82) batting average. Overall in his career, he has held lefties to a .213 (115-541) clip.
 
The Venezuela native owns a 19-10 career record with two saves, a 3.09 ERA (106 earned runs/308.2 innings) with 118 walks and 276 strikeouts in 399 career appearances.
