Mets to host home opener April 4 vs. Nationals

April 2nd, 2019

The New York Mets will host their home opener at Citi Field Thursday, April 4, at 1:10 p.m. vs. the Washington Nationals. In addition to witnessing Opening Day pre-game and in-game ceremonies featuring special guests, all fans in attendance will receive a 2019 magnetic schedule, courtesy of Hyundai.

The annual Shea family floral presentation, a tradition that dates back to the first Opening Day at Shea Stadium in 1964, will begin approximately 35 minutes before first pitch. Bill Shea was instrumental in bringing National League baseball back to New York. Shea’s son, Bill Jr., as well as his grandson William Anfuso, great grandson William Anfuso Jr. and son-in-law Bob Ryan will be on hand to present Mets manager Mickey Callaway with a good luck floral arrangement.

Members of the Hodges family will be recognized on field prior to the ceremonial first pitch on what would have been Gil Hodges’ 95th birthday. Hodges led the Mets to their first World Championship in 1969. Gil’s son, Gil Hodges Jr., will throw the pitch to Mets Hall of Famer and 1969 World Series Champion Ed Kranepool. Joan Hodges, Gil’s wife, and their daughter Cyndi will join Hodges Jr. on the field for the pitch.

Broadway’s Micaela Diamond of “The Cher Show” will perform the national anthem. The New York City Fire Department will present the colors. In the middle of the seventh inning, NYPD PO Makiah Brown will sing “God Bless America.”

The Mets’ first homestand of the 2019 season continues on Saturday, April 6 vs. Washington at 1:10 p.m. The first 25,000 fans in attendance will receive a Todd Frazier WWE Day Bobblehead. WWE Superstars Drew McIntyre, Mickie James and Curt Hawkins are scheduled to be in attendance (subject to change). On Sunday, April 7 at 1:10 p.m., the first 25,000 fans in attendance will receive a Jacob deGrom Cy Young bobblehead presented by Citi. That game also marks the first of 14 McDonald’s Family Sundays of the season, featuring kid-friendly activities on Mets Plaza pre-game and the Mr. Met Dash (afternoon games only) where kids 12-and-under can run the bases after the final out. The homestand concludes with a two-game series vs. the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday, April 9 and Wednesday, April 10, with first pitch for each of those games scheduled for 7:10 pm.
