November 21st, 2019

MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today selected the contracts of six players to their 40-man roster. All six rank among Miami’s Top 30 prospects on MLB Pipeline, including five of their top 12.

The Marlins added four right-handed pitchers: Edward Cabrera, Humberto Mejía, Nick Neidert, and Sixto Sánchez. They also added two position players: infielders Jazz Chisholm and Lewin Díaz. To make room for the six additions, the Marlins designated left-handed pitcher Wei-Yin Chen for assignment. Miami’s 40-man roster is now full.

Sánchez is Miami’s consensus No. 1 prospect, and No. 5 among all Minor League right-handed pitchers on Pipeline. He went 8-4 with a 2.53 ERA (103.0 IP/29 ER) and 97 strikeouts against just 19 walks in 18 starts for Double-A Jacksonville this season. He held opponents to a .225 batting average and posted a 1.03 WHIP. He was acquired by Miami from Philadelphia in February 2019.

Chisholm, Miami's No. 4 overall prospect on Pipeline, was acquired at the 2019 trade deadline from Arizona. In his first season in Double-A, he hit 21 home runs over 112 games, tied for the second-most in the Southern League. He batted .284 (23x81) with four doubles, two triples, three home runs, and 10 RBI in 23 games with Jacksonville upon joining the Marlins’ organization.

Cabrera, Miami’s No. 6 prospect, went 9-4 with a 2.23 ERA (96.2/24) in 19 starts between High-A Jupiter and Jacksonville this year. He posted 116 strikeouts and held opponents to a .190 batting average. He was a Florida State League All-Star and Pitcher of the Week (June 3-9).

Neidert missed much of 2019 due to a knee injury but returned in August and went 2-2 with a 3.82 ERA (30.2/13) over six starts to end the regular season. Miami's No. 11 prospect then pitched in the Arizona Fall League, where he was 2-0 with a 1.25 ERA (21.2/3) for Salt River. Neidert, who started the Fall Stars Game, held opponents to a .205 average with 19 strikeouts against two walks. He was acquired from Seattle in December 2017.

Díaz, Miami’s No. 12 prospect, also joined the Club at the 2019 trade deadline. He hit .270 (123x455) with 33 doubles, two triples, 27 home runs, and 76 RBI in 121 games across two leagues last season.

Mejía, Miami’s No. 29 prospect, split the season between Low-A Clinton and Jupiter, going 5-2 with a 2.09 ERA (90.1/21) over 18 appearances (14 starts). He was 5-1, 2.03 (66.2/15) in 13 games (10 starts) for Clinton, earning Midwest League All-Star honors. He led the league in ERA, average against (.176), and WHIP (0.92) at the time of his promotion on June 23.
