The Miami Marlins today announced the club's Minor League coordinators for the 2019 season, including former Marlins' outfielder Juan Pierre, who joins the Player Development department as Outfield Coordinator.
The Marlins also announced that Eric Duncan has been hired as Hitting Coordinator, Chris Michalak will return for his second season as Pitching Coordinator, Gene Glynn has been hired as Infield & Baserunning Coordinator, and Jamie Quirk has been hired as Catching Coordinator. Additionally, Dr. Derick Anderson has joined the organization as Director of Sports Performance.
"We could not be happier with the group of coordinators that we have assembled for 2019," said Marlins' Director of Player Development Dick Scott. "We are excited about the knowledge, work ethic, and character that they will pass down to our young players, and the impact that will have on our goal of building a sustainable organization."
Pierre, 41, was a member of the Marlins' 2003 World Series championship team. He batted .295 and stole 190 bases in four seasons with the Club (2003-05, 2013), and did not miss a game during his initial three-year stint in South Florida. This is his first career coaching assignment.
Duncan, 34, is entering his 15th season in professional baseball. He was a first-round pick by the New York Yankees in the 2003 MLB Draft; he spent the last four seasons as a hitting coach in the Yankee's Minor League system after a 10-year playing career.
Michalak, 48, joined the Marlins as Pitching Coordinator in 2018 after serving as a pitching coach for eight seasons in the Washington Nationals' system. He appeared in 61 MLB games during a 16-year playing career.
Glynn, 62, is entering his 27th season as a professional coach, the last four as Third Base Coach for the Minnesota Twins. He has been a third or first-base coach in 12 seasons for Colorado, Montreal, the Cubs, San Francisco, and Minnesota in his career, and has also held Pro Scout, Minor League Field Coordinator, and Manager (Single-A and Triple-A) postings.
Quirk, 64, enters his 47th season in professional baseball. He had an 18-year playing career that included a World Series title with the Kansas City Royals in 1985, and has been a coach for 23 seasons, including 19 at the Major League level and four as a Minor League manager.
Dr. Anderson joins the Marlins for his sixth season in professional sports. He spent the last five seasons with New York Mets and Florida Panthers as their Performance/Clinical Psychologist Dr. Anderson has also served as the Clinical Psychologist for the National Basketball Association for the last four years. He has a doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the Miami Institute of Psychology and received his undergraduate degree in Psychology from Florida International University.
The remainder of the coordinator staff for 2019 will include: Lee Tressel (Rehab Strength & Conditioning); Spencer Clevenger (Assistant Strength and Conditioning); Richard Stark (Athletic Training); Steve Carlin (Rehab); Austin Lamkey (Video); and Mark Brown (Clubhouse & Equipment).
