Miami Marlins make nine selections on Day 2 of 2021 MLB First-Year Player Draft

The Miami Marlins today made nine selections on Day 2 of the 20201 First-Year Player Draft. The Club’s first selection was INF Cody Morissette from Boston College in the second round (52nd overall). Of Miami’s 11 draftees thus far, seven are position players (four from collegiate ranks), and four are pitchers (all collegiate).

Morissette, 21, earned All-ACC First Team honors in 2021, batting .321 with six home runs and 33 RBI in 41 games. He was named a Collegiate Baseball News All-American in 2020, and selected to the All-ACC Second Team and Freshman Team in 2019. Across his three years at Boston College, Morissette hit .337 in 114 games, with 12 home runs and 85 RBI.

Following seven position players to begin the 2021 Draft, including 2021 SEC Player of the Year OF Tanner Allen from Mississippi State University in the fourth round (118th overall), the Marlins chose RHP Gabe Bierman from Indiana University in the seventh round. Bierman, 21, earned Second-Team All-Big Ten honors in 2021, going 5-4 with 2.68 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 12 starts (one complete game).

Miami began the 2021 Draft selecting INF Kahlil Watson with the 16th overall pick and C Joe Mack with the 31st overall. Watson, a shortstop from Wake Forest High School in North Carolina and consensus top 10 prospect, ranked No. 4 by MLB Pipeline, No. 5 by ESPN, No. 6 by Baseball America and No. 7 by The Athletic. Mack, a catcher from Williamsville East High School in New York, was ranked the No. 19 prospect by MLB Pipeline and No. 22 by Baseball America.
