The New York Yankees today announced that third baseman Miguel Andújar is the recipient of the 2018 James P. Dawson Award, given annually to the outstanding Yankees rookie in spring training.
Andújar, 23, hit .262 (11-for-42) with 5R, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 4HR and 10RBI in 14 spring training games. A native of San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic, he made his Major League debut with the Yankees in 2017, going 4-for-7 with 2 doubles and 4RBI. He also was presented with the 2017 Kevin Lawn Award as the Yankees' top position player. Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2011, Andújar has hit .274 (622-for-2,271) with 296R, 131 doubles, 51HR and 336RBI in 596 games over six minor league seasons in the Yankees organization.
The award was established in honor of James P. Dawson (1896-1953), who began a 45-year career with The New York Times as a copy boy in 1908. Eight years later, he became boxing editor and covered boxing and baseball until his death during spring training in 1953.
Two winners of the honor, Tony Kubek in 1957 and Tom Tresh in 1962, went on to win the American League "Rookie of the Year" Award. The Dawson Award first was presented to rookie Norm Siebern by Manager Casey Stengel in St. Petersburg, Fla., at the conclusion of spring training in 1956. New York Yankees beat writers vote on the winner.
In conjunction with the award, Andújar received a watch from Betteridge Jewelers.
