SEATTLE, Wash. – Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto and Director of Player Development Andy McKay announced today that the team has added former Major League outfielder Mike Cameron to the player development staff as a Special Assignment coach.
Cameron begins his new role with the Seattle organization today with the Arkansas Travelers, the club’s affiliate in the AA Texas League.
In his new role, Cameron will work with Mariners prospects at all levels of the organization, with a focus on outfield defense and base running. In addition to his time in the minors, he will periodically join the Major League club, as well.
Cameron spent 17 seasons in the Major Leagues with Chicago-AL (1995-1998), Cincinnati (1999), Seattle (2000-2003), New York-NL (2004-2005), San Diego (2006-2007), Milwaukee (2008-2009), Boston (2010-2011) and Florida (2011). He won three Gold Glove® Awards (2001 and 2003 with Seattle and 2006 with San Diego) and was an American League All-Star with the Mariners in 2001.
For his career he appeared in 1955 big league games, posting a .249 (1700x6839) average with 383 doubles, 59 triples, 278 home runs and 968 RBI. Mike stole 297 bases with an 83% success rate. In his four seasons in Seattle, Cameron hit .256 (554x2162) with 115 doubles, 19 triples, 87 home runs, 344 RBI and 106 stolen bases in 610 games.
Cameron is a LaGrange, Georgia, native who was drafted out of LaGrange High School by the White Sox in 1991. His son, Daz, was a first-round selection by the Houston Astros in the 2015 First Year Player Draft. Daz is currently playing with AAA Toledo in the Detroit Tigers system.
