Nationals Announce Roster Moves

May 20th, 2019

The Washington Nationals made the following roster moves on Monday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcements.

· Recalled from rehab assignment and reinstated left-handed pitcher Tony Sipp from the 10-day Injured List

· Claimed right-handed pitcher Javy Guerra on outright waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays

· Designated left-handed pitcher Dan Jennings for assignment

Sipp, 35, returns to the active roster after missing 11 games with a strained oblique. Prior to being placed on the Injured List, he tossed scoreless relief in nine straight outings, giving up just two hits with five strikeouts and three walks across 6.0 innings.

Sipp paced the Nationals’ bullpen with six holds. At the time of injury, his six holds ranked tied for seventh among National League relievers.

Sipp has made 17 appearances out of Washington’s bullpen, going 1-1 with 6.00 ERA. Over that stretch, he has allowed just one extra-base hit, a double to Michael Conforto on April 6 at New York (NL).

Guerra, 33, posted a 3.86 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 14.0 innings pitched across 11 appearances out of Toronto’s bullpen in 2019. He tossed scoreless relief in eight of the 11 outings, including his final three with the Blue Jays. In those three appearances, he surrendered five hits, with four strikeouts and one walk. He allowed just one extra-base hit during this stretch.

In his final outing with Toronto on May 17, he tossed 3.0 innings of two-hit relief to earn his first save of the season.

A veteran of nine Major League seasons, Guerra has posted a 3.44 ERA with 32 saves across 212 relief appearances with Toronto (2019), Miami (2017-18), Los Angeles-AL (2016), Chicago-AL (2014-15) and Los Angeles-NL (2011-13).

Jennings, 32, went 1-2 with a 13.50 ERA in eight appearances out of the Nationals bullpen.
