Following a week in which he hit .550 (11-for-20) with four doubles, three home runs, seven RBI, seven walks and ten runs scored, Nationals right fielder Bryce Harper was named the National League Player of the Week on Monday. Major League Baseball made the announcement on MLB Network.
The high point of the week came on April 19 at Atlanta when Harper recorded his 12th career multi-home run game, including his third career grand slam, while matching career highs in hits (4), runs (4) and runs batted in (5). He finished the night 4-for-4 with one double, two home runs, five RBI, one walk and four runs scored.
He added another home run on April 21 at New York, a two-run shot in the first inning off Mets right-hander Matt Harvey. Harper also helped the Nationals rally in the top of the 11th in that game with a one-out double. He eventually came around to score the go-ahead run when Trea Turner walked with the bases loaded.
On the week, Harper recorded a 1.200 slugging percentage and a .667 on-base percentage, recording seven extra base hits and reaching base in 18 of his 27 plate appearances.
This is the fifth Player of the Week award for Harper and it marks the second consecutive year in which he took home the award in April (also April 18, 2016).
Entering play on Monday, Harper ranks among Major League Baseball hitters in on-base percentage (1st, .524), batting average (1st, .400), runs scored (1st, 22), walks (T1st, 17), slugging percentage (2nd, .815), RBI (2nd, 20), and home runs (T2nd, 6).
The first league award for the Nationals this season, Harper's award adds to the haul he's brought in (May 4-10, May 11-17, Sept. 14-20, 2015 & April 11-17, 2016) as well as those won by Danny Espinosa (June 27-July 3, 2016), Max Scherzer (June 15-21 & Sept. 28-Oct. 4, 2015), Stephen Strasburg (Sept. 14-20, 2015 & June 7-13, 2010), Jordan Zimmermann (Sept. 22-28, 2014; June 2-8, 2014), Adam LaRoche (Sept. 1-7, 2014), Jayson Werth (June 30-July 6, 2014), Ryan Zimmerman (July 16-22, 2012; Aug. 15-21, 2011; July 30-Aug. 5, 2007), Josh Willingham (July 27-Aug. 2, 2009), Cristian Guzman (Aug. 25-31, 2008), and Nick Johnson (May 31-June 6, 2005) as other Nationals honorees.
