Olson, Chapman, Murphy Named Rawlings Gold Glove Finalists

October 28th, 2021

OAKLAND, Calif. - Oakland A's first baseman Matt Olson, third baseman Matt Chapman, and catcher Sean Murphy have been named finalists for the Rawlings Gold Glove Award, which recognizes the best defensive players at each position. Olson and Chapman won the Gold Glove in both 2018 and 2019. Winners will be announced on Nov. 7.

Olson, 27, led American League first basemen in total chances (1,235) and fielding percentage (.995), tied for second in assists (73), and ranked second in putouts (1,156). Offensively, he set career highs in runs (101), hits (153), doubles (34), home runs (39), RBI (111), walks (88), extra base hits (74), and stolen bases (4). Among Major League first basemen, he ranked first in RBI and second in home runs. The left-handed hitter led the Majors in home runs (22) against left-handed pitchers, an Oakland record.

Chapman, 28, led Major League third basemen with a .987 fielding percentage (440-for-446), ranked first in total chances (446) and putouts (166), ranked second in double plays (38), and was fourth in assists (274). The putouts are the most by a third baseman since Darrell Evans had 185 for Atlanta in 1974 and the third most in Oakland history (Sal Bando had 188 in 1968, 178 in 1969). His .9865 fielding percentage fell just shy of the Oakland record of .9872 (386-for-391) set by Eric Chavez in 2006.

Murphy, 27, tied for third among Major League catchers in defensive runs saved (10) and ranked fourth among American League catchers in ERA (3.99) and games started (104). His 17 home runs are the most by an A's catcher since Stephen Vogt also hit 17 in 2015 and are the sixth most in Oakland history while playing catcher.

While the award originated in 1957, Rawlings first began highlighting the top three defenders at each position in 2011. Each manager and up to six coaches on his staff vote from a pool of qualified players in their League and cannot vote for players from their own team. In 2013, Rawlings added a sabermetric component to the Rawlings Gold Glove Award selection process, as part of its collaboration with the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR). The SABR Defensive Index™ comprises approximately 25 percent of the overall selection total, with the manager and coach vote continuing to carry the majority.
