The Philadelphia Phillies selected right-hander Kevin Gowdy in the second round (42nd overall) of the 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft, Johnny Almaraz, Director of Amateur Scouting, announced tonight.
Gowdy, 18, pitched for Santa Barbara High School (Calif.) and went 4-1 with a 1.59 ERA (10 ER, 56.2 IP), 93 strikeouts and just five walks during his senior season. The 6-foot-4, 180-pound righty was a 2016 Rawlings-Perfect Game First Team All-American and a member of USA Baseball's 18U National team.
The draft will continue tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. with rounds three through 10, and will conclude Saturday with rounds 11 through 40. Philadelphia's first selection tomorrow will be in the third round (78th overall).
