Pirates Acquire Alfonso Rivas, Jackson Wolf And Estuar Suero From San Diego

The Pittsburgh Pirates today acquired first baseman Alfonso Rivas, left-handed pitcher Jackson Wolf and outfielder Estuar Suero from the San Diego Padres organization in exchange for left-handed pitcher Rich Hill and first baseman/designated hitter Ji Man Choi.

The 26-year-old Rivas has spent a majority of the 2023 season with Triple-A El Paso, where he hit .332 (69-for-208) with 19 doubles, three triples, nine home runs, 40 RBI, .462 OBP, .582 slugging percentage and 1.044 OPS in 58 games.

Rivas, who made his big league debut with the Chicago Cubs in 2021, spent eight games with the Padres this season. During the 2022 campaign as a member of the Cubs, he made a total of 92 appearances (73 starts) at first base, committing just one error in 642 total chances in 646.1 innings.

The 24-year-old Wolf, who is currently rated as San Diego’s No. 16 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, made his big league debut last month at Detroit when he started and allowed three runs in 5.0 innings while picking up his first Major League win.

Wolf came into today with an organizational-leading 105 strikeouts, which also ranked fourth among all pitchers in the Texas League. Wolf, who was selected by the Padres in the fourth round of the 2021 First-Year Player Draft out of West Virginia University, also ranked second in the Texas League in wins (eight) and WHIP (1.09), fourth in batting average against (.228) and fifth in ERA (4.08).

The 17-year-old Suero spent his first professional season in the Dominican Summer League last year after being a member of San Diego’s 2022 international draft class. This season the switch-hitting outfielder has spent the entire year in the Arizona Complex League, where he hit .216 (30-for-139) with four doubles, one triple, four home runs and 23 RBI in 35 games.
