The Pittsburgh Pirates continued to bolster their bullpen on Monday evening, acquiring right-handed pitcher Lake Bachar (pronounced “BAHK-er”) from Miami, in exchange for right-handed pitcher Brandan Bidois, outfielder Brian Sanchez and infielder Hyun Seung Lee.
The 31-year-old Bachar went 1-2 with two saves, a 3.84 ERA (58.2ip/25er), 61 strikeouts and a .201 batting average against (43-for-214) over his 38 appearances (four starts) with the Marlins this season.
The native of Winfield, Illinois, has held righties to a .170 batting average against (16-for-94) and a .554 OPS. His batting average against righthanders ranks sixth in the National League (minimum 90 at-bats), behind only Los Angeles’ Shohei Ohtani (.142), Los Angeles’ Edgardo Henriquez (.144), Chicago’s Ben Brown (.157), New York’s Huascar Brazobán (.162) and Pittsburgh’s Gregory Soto (.162).
Bachar, who was originally selected by San Diego out of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in the fifth round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft, has gone a combined 9-5 with five saves, a 3.88 ERA (139.0ip/60er) and 147 strikeouts in 101 career games (five starts) with Miami (2024-26).
Right-handed pitcher Ron Marinaccio has been designated for assignment. The 40-man roster is full.
