A’s acquire OF Junior Perez from San Diego as the PTBNL in Mateo trade

OAKLAND, Calif. – ­­­­The Oakland A’s acquired minor league outfielder Junior Perez from San Diego as the player to be named later in the June 30 trade in which they dealt infielder Jorge Mateo to the Padres.

Perez batted .268 with 11 home runs and 39 RBI in 51 games for the Padres Arizona Rookie League affiliate in 2019. He tied for second in the league in home runs and tied for fourth in RBI. The 19-year-old right-handed hitter was signed by San Diego out of the Dominican Republic on July 4, 2017. He hit .176 in 61 games with Padres Dominican Summer League club in his professional debut in 2018 but walked 53 times for a .354 on-base percentage. Perez is a .223 career hitter with 14 home runs, 65 RBI and a .351 on-base percentage in 112 games in two seasons as a professional and was rated as San Diego’s 16th best prospect by mlb.com.

Mateo was acquired by the A’s from the Yankees on July 31, 2017 in the Sonny Gray trade. He spent two-plus seasons in the Oakland farm system and did not reach the majors. Mateo made his Major League debut with San Diego this year and hit .154 with two RBI in 22 games.
