A's acquire RHPs Ginn and Oller from the New York Mets for RHP Bassitt
OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland Athletics acquired right-handed pitchers J.T. Ginn and Adam Oller from the New York Mets for right handed pitcher Chris Bassitt, the club announced today.
Ginn was the Mets second round selection in the 2020 First-Year Player Draft and combined to go 5-5 with a 3.03 ERA and .223 opponents batting average in 18 starts for Low-A St. Lucie and High-A Brooklyn in his professional debut in 2021. He struck out 81 and walked 22 while surrendering just three home runs in 92.0 innings. The 22-year-old right-hander is rated as the Mets fifth-best prospect by MLB.com and sixth-best by Baseball America. Ginn was originally a first round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2018 but attended Mississippi State where he went 8-4 with a 3.22 ERA in 18 starts in two seasons.
Oller was named the Mets Organizational Pitcher of the Year in 2021 after posting a 9-4 record and a 3.45 ERA in 23 starts for Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Syracuse. He struck out 138 batters in 120.0 innings and held the opposition to a .212 batting average. The 27-year-old right-hander was originally drafted by Pittsburgh in 2016 and played in the San Francisco farm system in 2019 before the Mets selected him in the 2020 minor league Rule 5 draft. Oller is 24-20 with a 4.05 ERA in 99 games, including 56 starts, in five professional seasons. He has 395 strikeouts in 380.1 innings and has walked just 115.
Bassitt was a first-time American League All-Star in 2021 who missed a month of the season after being hit in the face by a line drive on Aug. 17. He returned in late September to make two starts and went 12-4 with a 3.15 ERA and .218 opponents batting average in 27 starts overall. At the time of the injury, he was leading the AL in wins (12) and innings pitched (151.0) and finished tied for 11th and 18th (157.1) respectively. The 33-year-old right-hander had career highs in wins, strikeouts (159), winning percentage (.750), games started (27) and innings pitched, and his opponents batting average was a career low as was his .278 on-base percentage. Bassitt was one of four players acquired from the White Sox following the 2014 season in the Jeff Samardzija trade and is 31-25 with a 3.47 ERA in 106 games, including 93 starts, in seven seasons in the majors. He posted a 3.44 ERA in six seasons with the A’s and ranks 10th on the Oakland career ERA list.
