A’s Mark Canha named American League Player of the Week

The outfielder hit .474 (9-for-19) with four home runs last week

**OAKLAND, Calif. – **Oakland A’s outfielder Mark Canha has been named American League Player of the Week for the week ending on August 25. It is his first career Player of the Week award.

Canha, 30, hit .474 (9-for-19) with 5 runs, 1 double, 4 home runs, 7 RBI and a .524 on-base percentage with a 1.158 slugging mark in five games during the award-winning week. He hit safely in all five games he appeared in, including multi-hit efforts in four of them. He had his second career multi-home run game on Aug. 25 vs. San Francisco. Among American Leaguers last week, he ranked first in batting average, tied for second in home runs (4), tied for fifth in RBI (7), and tied for tenth in runs (5) and hits (9). 

He has appeared in 95 games with the A’s this season, hitting .275 (83-for-302) with 57 runs, 12 doubles, 2 triples, 22 home runs, 46 RBI, 48 walks and a .390 on-base percentage, .546 slugging mark and a .936 OPS. The home runs, batting average, walks, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and OPS are all career bests.

Among American Leaguers with at least 300 at-bats, Canha’s .390 on-base percentage ranks 6th, his 13.73 at bats/home run rate ranks 7th, and his .936 OPS ranks 10th.

This is the fourth American League Player of the Week award for the A's this season, as Canha joins right-handed pitcher Mike Fiers who shared the award for the week ending May 12 for his no-hitter against Cincinnati on May 7, shortstop Marcus Semien who earned the award for the week ending on June 9 and outfielder Ramón Laureano who was recognized for the week ending July 21.
