A’s select OF Barrera from Las Vegas; designate OF McKinney for assignment

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s selected outfielder Luis Barrera from Triple-A Las Vegas and designated outfielder Billy McKinney for assignment, the club announced today.

Barrera was hitting .286 with six doubles, a triple, three home runs and 10 RBI in 23 games with Triple-A Las Vegas. He had a .345 batting average against right-handed hitters and started 14 games in center field, five in left field, three in right field and one at designated hitter. The 26-year-old left-handed hitter made his Major League debut with Oakland last year and went 2-for-8 (.250) in six games. Barrera was on the A’s 40-man roster entering the season but was designated for assignment on April 11 and outrighted to Las Vegas on April 15.

McKinney was on the A’s Opening Day roster and went 5-for-52 (.096) with a home run and four RBI in 23 games. He is a .206 career hitter with 28 home runs and 72 RBI in 263 games in six seasons in the majors with the Yankees (2018), Blue Jays (2018-20), Brewers (2021), Mets (2021), Dodgers (2021) and A’s (2022).
